The dwarf edible banana (Musa acuminata) is native to tropical Southeast Asia in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines. Today this species occurs worldwide in the tropics and, together with Musa balbisiana, is involved as one of the mother species in the development of the well-known fruit and dessert banana (Musa x paradisiaca). The perennial belonging to the banana family (Musaceae) was first described in 1820 by the Italian botanist Luigi Colla. Although this species is considered to be very robust and tolerates temperatures close to freezing, it is usually cultivated as a container plant here.
