The sugar cane palm (Dypsis baronii) is native to Madagascar. It lives in moist mountain forests, preferably on steep slopes, and can tolerate partial shade or sun. Outdoors, the palm can grow up to 8 meters high. Directly under the bark on the trunk there is a thick layer of red fibers; otherwise the wood is rather white. The Dypsis baronii is one of the most robust Madagascar palms. It is not very common as an ornamental plant, which is a shame because it is very beautiful and also a little cold-tolerant. If it is outdoors in this country, it will develop several slender trunks. This creates a wonderful green dome from the palm fronds. That is why it is also counted among the bundle palms.
