The potato rose (Rosa rugosa) is a frost-hardy, healthy wild rose that blooms all summer. It is particularly found in the colder regions of East Asia. Their home area stretches from northern China through Korea to Japan. In its homeland it grows on sandy soil and near the coast. In Germany, Rosa rugosa is also known as an apple rose, dune rose or in the north as a Sylter rose. It is believed that the first specimens were introduced to Europe in 1796 by gardeners Lee and Kennedy of Hammersmith.
