A large, shrub-like cactus that branches out from the base and forms large groups of distinctly ribbed, rather sparsely prickly, slender, yellowish-green trunks that can be up to 3 m high. The tubular, white to pink flowers are followed by round, edible fruits. Lophocereus schottii occurs in deserts in Arizona and northwest Mexico up to 800 m.
