The "real" Thai basil is Bai Horapa, because it is not only a subspecies of basil (Ocimum basilicum), it also has the only distinctive aroma reminiscent of anise and liquorice. This peculiarity distinguishes the basil from the European basil plant known to us. Thai basil is used in Thai cooking, especially for seasoning soups and sauces, sprinkling the leaves over the finished food and cooking only for a short time. In salads, the culinary herb is used uncooked.
