Aeonium is the name for a large genus of plants that is popular because of its pretty rosettes made of fleshy, mostly spoon-shaped leaves. Aeonium are able to store water in their thick-fleshed leaves and thus survive comparatively unrivaled in dry places. Aeonium belong to the leaf succulents.
 In all species with a woody trunk, the bark is covered with scars where the leaves attach.
 In the middle of the rosettes of ripe specimens, numerous small, mostly star-shaped, cream-colored or yellow-green colored flowers form. The aeonium can bloom at any time of the year.
