The milkweed (English Silkweed or Scarlet Milkweed) is originally native to tropical America, but is now cultivated as an ornamental plant worldwide. Here, too, this interesting plant with its attractive flowers can be found widely as a pot or container plant.
Asclepias curassavica belongs to the family of swallow-root plants (Asclepiadaceae). It is a perennial, evergreen, small subshrub up to approx. 1 m with oppositely arranged, up to 15 cm long, narrow leaves. The color of the leaves varies, depending on the location, the incidence of light and also the temperature, from reddish to a strong green. The flowers appear in terminal, upright umbels, these are composed of about 5-15 bright orange-red-yellow individual flowers.
