The Chinese elm branches out fine and easily gets very small leaves, which makes them ideal for bonsai purposes. The elm is often confused with the Zelkowe, but if you compare the leaves of both tree species, the difference is clearly visible. The Chinese elm is the most popular elm species as bonsai, although other elms are well suited.
The Chinese elm thrives well in both the sun and partial shade. It can stand outside in a moderately mild climate during the winter.
