Roselle is a species of mallow that is often cultivated in Africa and forms the basis of many fruity tea blends. It is mainly consumed in North Africa as a karkade, a refreshing drink that is enjoyed both hot and cold.
In Europe it is better known in hibiscus, rose hip and fruit teas, which owe their bright red color and fruitiness to the fleshy calyxes. It is also beautiful as an ornamental plant, both in bloom and later when the seed heads mature.
